The practice of the evangelical counsels is not an end in itself - neither is love for them! while interpreting them as merely prohibitory norms is a very naive understanding, exalting them as virtues is an exaggeration. They carry no merit in themselves, other than that they lead us closer to Christ and our brethren. Important and functional as they are, what is of supreme value is the person of Jesus Christ and the commitment to His mission.
