EMPOWERING WOMEN: Formation of State Level (AP) Federation
By Fr. Thomas Santiagu SDB
Hyderabad, Sep. 6. It was a great day to remember for the underprivileged women of Andhra Pradesh  when a State Level Federation for Women had its fist meeting on the 1st and 2nd of September.  Forty two representative members of 14 Mutually Aided Co-operative Societies (MACS) had training on the concepts and functioning of State Level Federation of MACS.  This is indeed a great step forward in empowering the women of Andhra Pradesh, socially, economically and culturally.

The formation of this Federation is indeed a great step forward in making the women cooperatives into a state level entity. Perhaps the best part of this Federation is that it will ensure their self sustainability even after the completion of the programme project (a project coordinated by the Development office of the Salesian Province of Hyderabad, Bosco Seva Kendra (BSK).

After the establishment of the Board of Directors, the members  elected Ms. Parishudham from Swayam Krushi Urban Macs, Vijayawada,  Krishna District as their president. The general body also appointed Fr. Bellamkonda Sudhakar, Director of BSK as the Chief Executive Officer (CBO) of the Federation.

Before selection of the Board of Directors, all representatives, that is the General Body Members, started discussion about the title and norms of their APEX MACS. To cover all the areas, we used stratified sampling method based on our operational area: from Krishna District one  representative was elected as a board member, since in Krishna District currently we have only one Macs, and in the rest of the four districts we have 3 Macs from each district namely Chittoor District, East Godavari District, and Khammam District, and remaining 4 Macs adjusted in Guntur District.

This entire programme was facilitated by Fr. Thomas Santiagu, Staff, and Resource Persons Ms. Nalini, Mr.Raj Kumar, and Mr.Vijay Kumar.  BSK had a leverage role to play in the formation of the state level federation of women through its programme project.
